For the little ones who are starting their first school year, we have some advice and guidelines to follow since, logically, in these first days of the course you can have doubts and ask yourself some questions about this new stage.

At Les Fanfans Nursery we are at your disposal for any doubt you may have.
Also, we would like to give you some suggestions that are usually very good for these first days. Bear in mind that for many children, joining the school will be the first time they are separated from their family environment and their first experience of social life. It is associated with a unique personal process, full of intense and sometimes contradictory experiences and feelings for the child.

The important aspects to take into account for a correct process of adaptation to the nursery are:

  • The conflict generated by the child’s separation from his/her family and familiar environment.
  • The importance of favoring and accepting the manifestations of this conflict.
  • The need to respect the time each child needs to adapt and feel safe and loved.
  • The possible appearance of manifestations of a psychosomatic nature.
  • The importance of supporting the family in this change of life, since the child’s incorporation to the school environment can mean feelings of guilt, rejection, etc. for the people who normally attend to him. The conflict of separation is also for families, whose process of adaptation is simultaneous to that of their child.

Each child who joins the school is different from the rest and comes to the center with particular customs, timetables and rhythms. Paying attention to diversity during the adaptation period will help everyone (children, family and educators) to make the incorporation as easy as possible. Each student will adapt to the center “in his/her own way”.

For the family to collaborate in the incorporation and adaptation of their child to the nursery school:

  1. The person who accompanies the child must transmit tranquility and security at all times.
  2. As far as possible, incorporate the child gradually (avoid doing too many hours in a row from the first day).
  3. The goodbyes must be short, prolonging the moment to say goodbye will only produce anguish in your child who will believe that you are not leaving calmly and will not feel safe when you are undecided.
  4. Children must know when they are going to be picked up to avoid feelings of abandonment by referring to everyday moments (e.g. “I will come after lunch”, “after a nap”…).
  5. Talk to the child in a positive way about the center, as a place where they will have a good time, and never refer to school as a punishment. “if you misbehave I’ll take you to school”.
  6. Avoid making compassionate comments in front of the child that detect feelings of guilt, for example, “poor thing” “what a shame”.
  7. Be absolutely understanding of the child’s feelings and help them to express them. We must be able to empathize with them and allow them to express their emotions, whatever they may be, whether they are positive because they are happy to be in a new school or negative because they show rejection, it is good that they show it.
  8. Manifest great joy both when you leave them and when you pick them up, thus transmitting security and trust.
  9. Make sure that this period does not coincide with any other change such as: removing the diaper, leaving the pacifier, birth of a brother…
  10. If you have an object of attachment you can bring it during the first days to serve as a link between home and school (a blanket, your favorite stuffed animal…)
  11. If you are breastfeeding, start using the bottle at home several days before going to school, making sure that the mother is not alone in feeding. In this way, we adapt the baby to the contact with the nipple and to be fed by another person before entering the school.
  12. Never leave secretly, without the child noticing, to avoid the crying of the goodbye. In the long term we are generating a feeling of insecurity for the child and unnecessary anguish because he or she will believe that his or her father or mother can “disappear” at any moment.
Remember that the greater the collaboration between home and school, the easier it will be to adapt to the new environment.

We consider that the child is adapted when he or she is able to show himself or herself relaxed, express his or her emotions, establish affective and attachment relationships that will lead to increasingly autonomous interactions with this new environment provided by the school. Thanks to the understanding and involvement of the family and school professionals, in a few days children will feel as comfortable and happy at school as they do at home.
